HBF Builds Independence to Bring Families Together
Two years ago, Karen K. suffered a spinal stroke, which resulted in quadriplegia. Upon her return home from the hospital, she realized that the Lafayette home that she had previously enjoyed living in with her husband and 2-year-old son was now largely inaccessible. Her husband contacted Home Builders Foundation (HBF), which quickly installed a ramp by Por Mor Construction so that Karen could enter and leave the home in her wheelchair.
Throughout the remainder of 2023, HBF – in conjunction with Colorado Classic Cabinets and Architectural Imagineering – completed additional modifications to Karen’s home to make it more accessible and help her regain independence. They renovated the downstairs powder room and playroom to provide Karen with an accessible bedroom, bathroom, and roll-in closet. Special switches were installed to provide voice control for lights, fans, and thermostats. Last fall, a Blitz Build team from Berkeley Homes extended the home’s existing deck and added ramps and a sidewalk to the backyard so that Karen is able to enjoy the outdoors and play with her young son.
Both Karen and her husband are grateful for the increased accessibility and independence the modifications have provided. “I am now able to chase my son around and play hide and seek. It’s a comfort to have my own space and for us to have a house that’s actually lived in,” says Karen. She’s looking forward to spring when she’ll be able to watch their son swing on the playset in their backyard.
For 30 years, Home Builders Foundation (HBF) has been elevating the lives of individuals with physical disabilities. HBF, which is HBA’s Charity of Choice, creates home modifications that enhance safety, increase independence, and provide greater access to the community.
